A good drive on the opening hole of the Schoolmaster is to the left center of the fairway, away from the bunker on the right. A safe approach will put you on the left side of the green, clear of the front right bunker, but short of the back left one.
Pin placement on the enormous green of the par-3 second hole determines the shot shape required to get close to the pin. The pond will come into play if you block your tee shot. Coming up short or going long is better than going too far right or left here.
A good tee shot on Hole No. 3 will end up just to the right of the fairway bunker. Take an extra club on your approach shot to ensure that you safely carry the bunkers fronting the huge green.
Favor the left side off the tee on the par-5 fourth hole to avoid going through the fairway as this hole turns to the left. Second shots should favor the right side to avoid the center and left fairway bunkers. This should be a good hole to make a low score.
Use a long iron or fairway wood off the tee on Hole No. 5 to keep the water on the right out of play. Approach shots must carry all the way onto the green to avoid funneling back into the water.
Be sure to take enough club on the long par-3 sixth hole to safely carry the bunker in front of the green. The back right portion of the deep green has a large landing area and would be the safest target off the tee.
A good drive will find the left center of the fairway on the par-4 seventh hole, leaving you with a short-iron second shot. Play to the right side of this long, narrow green to avoid the deep bunker on the left.
The smart play off the tee on Hole No. 8 is a fairway wood to keep you safely short of the water that lies through the fairway. Proper approach shot club selection is critical as you must carry the water and bunker short of the green while stopping short of the other bunker in the back.
The solid shot will be required to reach the long par-5 ninth hole. The optimal tee shot landing area is along the left edge of the fairway. Second shots should stick to the right side to avoid the fairway bunkers and leave you with the best approach shot angle.
On the par-3 tenth hole, the safest target is the middle of the green, avoiding the water short and left and the bunker on the right. Overhanging tree limbs may force you to keep your tee shot lower than you might like.
A solid drive on the par-5 eleventh hole may give you the opportunity to get home in two. However, this shallow green, fronted by bunkers, is tough to hit and hold. Choose your second shot club wisely. Laying up behind the fairway bunkers for a short approach shot may be the smarter strategy.
A draw off the tee on the par-5 twelfth hole will be rewarded with extra yardage from the downhill slope of the fairway. If your second shot avoids the bunkers on the right, you could have a great chance at birdie after an accurate approach shot.
Play for the center of the fairway on the par-4 thirteenth hole. If your tee shot finds the short grass, you should be able to take dead aim at the flag and try to stick your approach shot close to the pin.
Hole No. 14 is one of the most picturesque holes on the course. Play your drive down the left center of the fairway, away from the pond on the right. Consider taking an extra club on your approach to safely clear the water fronting the green.
A perfect drive on the dogleg right par-4 fifteenth hole will hug the right edge of the fairway. The green is guarded by a single bunker in the front. Pin placement will determine the shot shape and club selection on your approach.
The short par-3 sixteenth hole allows you to aim right at the pin or, depending on the pin location, use some of the slopes in the green to funnel your tee shot closer to the hole. Just be sure that you carry the deep pot bunker short of the green.
Play your tee shot down the right center of the fairway on Hole No. 17 to avoid a steep drop-off near the trees on the left. The middle of the green should be the target for your short-iron approach shot.
A risk/reward tee shot sets up a great finishing hole. You can either lay up with a fairway wood short of the bunker on the right and take Wilson Lake out of play or hit a bomb over the bunker for a very short second shot. Take an extra club on the uphill approach.
